Wax is the by-product of the oil refining process and is also an essential raw material of the oil and fat chemical industry. Among various oils, Rice bran oil contains maximum amount of waxes (2 – 5%). There are numerous uses for rice bran wax, including waterproofing, electrical insulation, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Rice bran wax may be used to preserve fruits and vegetables since it is edible, inexpensive, stable, and has good film forming properties. It also has a high future potential due to India’s increased rice bran oil production. Wax separated from the rice bran oil contains up to 55 – 60% of oil. This oil needs to be recovered to increase the oil recovery rate & to purify the wax.
The Wax purification is done by two Methods:
1. Mechanical Extraction
2. Solvent Extraction.
Pemac’s Mechanical Extraction process involves top loading vertical plate type press machine operated with the help of hydraulic.
Benefits of this method are:
1. It consumes less electricity.
2. Longer service life.
3. Low Invest maintenance cost
4. Quick filtering cycle.
5. Easy to use
But this method has limitations as it cannot fully recover oil from the wax. About 28 – 30 % of oil remains in the wax. Also we won’t get refined quality of the wax by this method. To overcome this, the solvent extraction approach is followed by mechanical extraction methods.
Pemac’s Wax Extraction / Purification is controlled extraction process done to achieve less than 4% oil in wax and further derived to remove all the impurities. Further extension in this process can be done to make transparent wax cake or flakes.
The process is derived in below stages:
1. First Extraction
2. Second Extraction
3. Third Extraction
4. Decolourisation
5. Filtration
6. Cake or Flakes formation
Wax from Press machine is further purified by extracting with solvents .This removes the oil content in the crude wax. This eliminates about 90% of the oil from the crude wax, and the rest will be separated in the second extraction. The second step of extracting the de-oiled wax again using solvent that ensures the removal of any residual oil content in up to 98% . Along with lowering the iodine value and unsaturated lipid content, this procedure also helps to lower the free fatty acid content of the wax composites, extending their shelf life. In the final step, the de-oiled and defatted wax composite was extracted again with solvent to precipitates the residues matter. After filtering the wax to get rid of any leftovers, the solvent is eliminated by drying it. The end result of wax would have a low density and be light yellow in colour.
